MATLAB workshop 11/1/19

GEMS will be hosting a MATLAB training this Friday, November 1st 2019 from 11am to noon in Norris 229. Our fellow EM student, Masoud Shirazi, will help us learn how to use the software that could be useful for our research. Bring your laptop to follow along with the workshop.

GEMS along with Virginia Tech Career and Professional Development will be hosting a workshop for Resume, CV and LinkedIn building. Flyer attached! Bring your laptop and resume/CV with you to follow along with the workshop. 

Pumpkin Festival 10/13/19

GEMS will be joining the Pumpkin Festival event going on at Sinkland Farms on Sunday, October 13 from 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm. You are welcome to join us at any point in that time duration. Admission is $10 a person and includes a hay ride and corn maze. Pumpkins and food will be on sale at the venue. 

Field Day with BEAM 9/28/19

Our friends in BMES are organizing a fun Sunday afternoon on September 29th from 3pm onward at the Blacksburg Municipal Park. Bring a dish and your favorite game! 

Professional photography workshop 4/5/19

Did you know that a picture worth a thousand words? Do you want to learn how to take sharp and clear images from your experimental setup to prepare an impressive report that dazzles your audience?  Dr. Socha was kind enough to hold a professional photography workshop for us. Bring your lab camera or use your own cell phone camera to practice taking impressive photos worthy of your impressive research.

Alumni Q&A session 2/20/19

Please join us on Wednesday, February 20th 7pm-8pm in Norris 329 for a Q&A session with alumnus Maurizio Porfiri, a faculty member at New York University and IEEE fellow. He will be discussing his career journey and answering questions from current graduate students. Snacks will be provided!

MATLAB workshop 10/26/18

GEMS will be conducting a Matlab workshop for beginners to learn the basics which can help them booster their resumes or help them in their research/coursework. The workshop will be held on October 26, Friday in Room 229 from 1-3 pm. 

Pumpkin festival 10/13/18

Carve out some time this Saturday (Oct. 13th) to join GEMS at the Sinkland Farms Pumpkin Festival. There will be lots of fall-tastic activities, including a pumpkin patch, hay rides, a corn maze, delicious food, and live music! The festival is from 10am to 5pm, but GEMS will be arriving around 1pm. Admission is $10 a person and includes a hay ride and corn maze. Pumpkins and food will be on sale at the venue. 

LATEX workshop 9/5/18

GEMS will start off the semester with a workshop on LaTeX software. LaTeX is a high quality document preparation system that makes formatting, typesetting, and referencing easy. Many established conferences and journals have LaTeX templates for student use, which makes the submission process much easier than other document software.. 

BEAM and Brews 8/27/18

Celebrate the beginning of the new school year with BEAM students, faculty, staff, and alumni while enjoying Rising Silo’s house-brewed beers, non-alcoholic house-made sodas, and homemade snacks from Tabula Rasa. Event times: 5:30-7:30

Tubing 8/25/18

Get ready to sit back, relax, and put your feet up as we kick off the start of a new semester with tubing down the New River! Hang out and float with your fellow EM classmates for a few hours at the New River Junction on Saturday, August 25, 2018. We’ll plan to meet on campus for carpooling at 12:30pm. This event is weather permitting.

Back by popular demand, GEMS is hosting a LaTeX workshop on Thursday, April 19th, 3 pm in Norris 209, (the Global Technology Center). If you do not already have LaTeX installed on your machine, please contact Gary Nave (gknave@vt.edu) for instructions on installation.

Percentage Day at Buffalo Wild Wings 4/18/18

GEMS is hosting a percentage day fundraiser at Buffalo Wild Wings all day on Wednesday April 18th! Convince your advisor to take you out to lunch, or grab a few friends to take a break any time during the day! Just make sure your server knows you're there for GEMS. 15% of your bill goes towards GEMS to put on amazing events and helps us purchase 'free food' for you all!

 

Wix Website Seminar 4/11/18

Do you have a portfolio to advertise your awesome research and skills? If not, GEMS has a special workshop to help you build your personal website on Wednesday Apr 11th, from 2 pm-5 pm, Norris 325. If you already have a personal website and you have free time, please stop by and share your experience.

 

Kids Tech University 4/7/18

Kids Tech University (KTU) is an educational outreach program that runs during the Spring semesters aimed at curious children of age 9-12 years old. GEMS is participating in KTU where we demonstrate table top physics experiments to kids. We are setting up a booth to showcase some of the research happening in the Engineering Mechanics Program. Join GEMS to spread science in a fun way!!

International Recruitment Call 3/31/18

An open discussion session with international recruits unable to attend recruitment weekend to answer your queries/ concerns (if you have any) regarding the Engineering Mechanics program, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, stay, travel, etc. We shall have a couple of graduate students currently pursuing MS/ PhD in different fields- Fluids, Dynamics, Biomechanics, Solid Mechanics, etc. on the panel.

 

Game Night 3/27/18

Hey GEMS, let’s get out of the lab and play some board games! On Tuesday, March 27 from 6:30-8:30 pm in Norris Hall 325, GEMS will be hosting a game night with free snacks and fun! Feel free to bring any games that you’d like to share! Hope to see you there!
